To finish the rehabilitation of the Abuja light rail project in eight months, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered the full payment to be made to the Chinese Concession Company.
As part of his first task outside of the office, Wike issued the ultimatum on Wednesday while inspecting the Abuja Metro Station in Idu and the Airport Station.
He added that in order to fulfil President Bola Tinubu’s pledge to end Nigerians’ suffering as soon as feasible, the mission of rebuilding the Abuja metro has become extremely fundamental.
What Presidency Said About Nigeria Building Rail Line Into Niger Republic
With the Minister of State for the FCT, Mairiga Mahmud, and other ministry representatives by his side, Wike spoke to the contractors at the metro station’s main terminal and criticised the calibre of their work.
The FCT minister started the tour by taking the train from the metro station to Idu Station, to Idu Station, and finally to Airport Station.
According to news sources, the trains’ initial six phases of development were financed by loans from the China EXIM Bank.
The FCT Administration issued a new N5 billion contract in August 2023 for the reconstruction of the critical rail infrastructure within 12 months after it was vandalised.
The Abuja light rail that was built at the metro station began operations in 2018 and ran for nearly two years before it was discontinued, mostly due to vandalism.
