The Arewa Youths for Peace and Security (AYPS) has reacted to the interview granted by Mallam Mamman Daura, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew to the BBC Hausa Service.
Speaking via a statement on Sunday, The President of the social-political group, Alhaji Salisu Magaji, stated that Nigeria should consider competence in electing her next president in 2023, instead of the normal way of resorting to zoning.
Magaji argued it will be unfair not to allow the South take another shot at the presidency under the zoning arrangement before it is dropped.
2023: Presidency Disowns Mamman Daura Comment On Power Shift
The Arewa youths said that while the group’s thought is in sync with Mamman Daura’s belief that it is time to discard zoning the presidency and embrace credibility, merit and qualification to vote the best candidate, it is in the interest of equity, fairness and justice the South should first produce a President before zoning is jettisoned.
Recall that Anaedoonline reported that the powerbroker nephew of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), Mamman Daura, in a rare interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC, on Tuesday, suggested an end to zoning.
He said his uncle’s successor in 2023 should be chosen based on competence rather than simply which part of the country he comes from.
According to him, since Nigerians have tried the rotational presidency about thrice already, it would be better to go for the most qualified candidate.
