The military junta in the Niger Republic must be overthrown in order to restore its democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, according to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which claims to have prepared an invasion strategy and gathered the necessary resources.
“All the elements that would go into any eventual intervention have been brought out here and been refined, including the timing, the resources needed and the how and where and when we are going to deploy such a force,” assured Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security at a meeting with other ECOWAS chiefs in Abuja on Friday.
“We will make them handover to the civilian authorities,” Mr Musah added.
Niger Coup: West African Military Chiefs Meet In Abuja
At the ECOWAS summit on Friday in Abuja, Nigeria, there were noticeably no representatives from Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, or Guinea.
ECOWAS granted the junta two days to step down and let democracy reign, but Abdouramane Tchiani appears unyielding and reluctant to budge, as indicated by his announcement to sever ties with its neighbour Nigeria and three other countries.
He further requested the ambassadors to those nations to return when he declared Niger was suspending all diplomatic ties with France, Nigeria, Togo, and the United States on Thursday.
The delegation that President Bola Tinubu of ECOWAS, who was also sent to hold peaceful negotiations with the junta, was unable to see Mr. Tchiani and also denied entry to Niamey, the nation’s capital, a report by AP said.
