The Kogi State Police Command has disclosed the rationale behind the detention of Action Alliance (AA) candidate Olayinka Braimoh during the state’s off-cycle gubernatorial election.
According to the command, there was no electoral offence associated with the arrest.
However, it was discovered that Braimoh’s arrest was due to his disobedience of the directive restricting his movement on election day.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, Braimoh and a few of his assistants were detained in the state’s Kabba Bunu Local Government Area on suspicion of having certain campaign materials stored in his car.

In an interview with Newsmen, William Aya, the state Police Command spokesperson, provided additional details on the case. He made it clear that Braimoh and his aides’ arrest had nothing to do with the suspected crime that certain media outlets had been reporting.
He continued by saying that Braimoh was detained for disobeying an existing directive prohibiting security staff from travelling around with VIPs during the poll.
Aya said, “It was a violation of restriction of movement. You know there was an order that no security personnel should escort any VIP on the day of the election, and there was a restriction on movement.
“He violated the restriction of movement because they said the police and any security agencies attached to them should not move with them on that day. That was the order, and it was not as if there was any electoral offence.

“For this one now, it is the police that will probe. We have our disciplinary procedures for hearing of such. They stopped them while moving with security personnel. We put them in our office and allowed him to go because he is allowed to go alone and not go with his security agencies. It was just a violation of the order, and it was not electoral offence related.”
