Former US President Donald Trump has been indicted by a grand jury in Georgia for allegedly attempting to rig the 2020 presidential election.
On Monday, 41 counts of felony racketeering and many other conspiracy accusations were brought against Trump and 18 other defendants.
According to NBC News, the indictment names attorneys Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Kenneth Chesebro, Jenna Ellis, Ray Smith, and other colleagues.
America Decides: Biden Overtakes Trump In Georgia
The Fulton County District Attorney, Fani Willis, alleged that during the voting process, Trump and his friends exerted pressure on Georgia authorities to sway ballots in the ex-president’s favour.
According to reports, Trump called Brad Raffensperger, the Republican Secretary of State, to “find” the votes he needed to defeat Joe Biden.
He was also accused of “false statements and writings for several falsehoods about voter fraud in Georgia in his communications with Raffensperger, Georgia Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs and Georgia Secretary of State General Counsel Ryan Germany on Jan. 2, 2021.”
In their joint release accusing the witnesses of bias, they said, “This one-sided grand jury presentation relied on witnesses who harbor their own personal and political interests — some of whom ran campaigns touting their efforts against the accused and/or profited from book deals and employment opportunities as a result,”
Can Trump Stage a Comeback?: Georgia to Recount US Election Ballots by ‘HAND’
Speaking with Fox News Digital on Monday night, the ex-president described the indictment as “a continuation of the greatest and longest-running witch hunt in American history.”
“This politically-inspired indictment, which could have been brought close to three years ago, was tailored for placement right smack in the middle of my political campaign, where I am leading all Republicans—by a lot—and beating Joe Biden soundly in almost all polls,” he continued.
Trump is facing comparable accusations in Washington of meddling in the 2020 elections after many of his followers invaded the US Capitol in January 2021. He had earlier in August entered a not guilty plea to four counts accusing him of being the head of a plot to mislead the American people by delaying legal processes and tampering with the 2020 election.
