The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has postponed the August 9, 2023, statewide demonstration it had scheduled.
The present strike by the resident doctors is also probably going to end shortly.
After meeting with Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other Principal Officers of the Senate at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday, the association’s National President, Dr. Emeka Innocent Orji, briefed reporters on the cancellation.
The Federal Ministry of Health, the Office of the Head of the Federal Civil Service, and the federal and state tertiary health institutes in the nation were among the targets of NARD’s planned nonviolent demonstrations starting on Wednesday.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, NARD began an indefinite strike on July 26, 2023, after giving the government a two-week deadline to abide with its demands.
Along with other demands, doctors want the one-for-one replacement policy for healthcare workers implemented, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to stop downgrading membership certificates issued by West African Postgraduate Medical and Surgical Colleges, the immediate payment of all salary arrears, the implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, a new hazard allowance, and the domestication of the Medical Residency Programme.
After meeting with the Senate leadership, Orji stated that they were extremely optimistic that when they presented their ideas to the NEC, something constructive would come of it.

He said, “From our interaction with the President of the Senate and the practical demonstration he did before us today, we are very confident that there will be light at the end of the tunnel in the next 24 hours.”
The planned national protest had been called off as a result of Akpabio’s involvement and the assurances offered to them, he said, and the decision about the ongoing strike will be made as soon as they met.
Senator Akpabio praised the physicians for upholding the Senate’s honour.
He assured them that his office had taken note of their demands and said the Senate will work quickly to resolve all of their complaints once a Minister in charge of Health had been named.
