Ibrahim Onoja, the managing director of the Port Harcourt refinery rehabilitation, announced that more than 75% of the project is now finished.
“More than 75% of this work has been finished and expedited as labourers work both day and night shifts,” Onoja said.
A thorough report detailing the significant advancements made was provided by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to support this claim.
Launched in April 2021, the project employs 3000 people who work diligently around the clock to accumulate 8.3 million man-hours with no missed time due to injuries.

Onoja highlighted the wide range of changes, stating that since the refinery’s founding in 1965, instrumentation, control units, and rotating machinery like pumps and compressors have all seen substantial advancements.
In answer to a pointed question concerning viability, Onoja assured that the Port Harcourt refinery will be up and running by the deadline.
This month marks the refinery’s anticipated opening. It will produce a range of petroleum products, including petrol, kerosene, diesel, low- and high-pour fuel oil and liquefied petroleum gas.
Mele Kyari, the group chief executive officer of NNPCL, reaffirmed this commitment, saying that the refinery is expected to be up by the end of December 2023.
