On January 25, 2024, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) released a press statement cautioning people against committing unnatural acts and same-sex marriages, both of which are prohibited in Nigeria.
The press statement was triggered by a recent social media trend in which certain people who identify as LGBT were openly supporting and linking themselves to acts that were deemed to be abnormal in light of Nigerian legislation. The press release was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
According to the NPF, unnatural acts are forbidden by the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, which is applicable in the Southern States, and the Nigerian Penal Code, which is applicable in the Northern States. Examples of such violations include having carnal knowledge of a person or animal against the natural order.

According to the NPF, same-sex marriage is illegal in Nigeria due to the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, which also makes it illegal to organise, conduct, or publicly exhibit same-sex marriages.
The NPF stressed how crucial it is to comprehend and abide by these laws because any infraction would result in the appropriate legal procedures.
In addition, the NPF asked all residents to report any suspicious activity pertaining to same-sex marriage or other unnatural offences. It also urged parents and guardians to assist the police in combating these illegal and culturally foreign acts of inhumanity that violate Nigerian law.
The NPF’s press statement coincides with mounting worries about the state of lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) human rights in Nigeria, who face severe challenges and discrimination in the country.
