Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, will face punishment soon, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Festus Okoye, an INEC spokesperson, stated that the police have completed their investigations and that the commission has enough evidence to prosecute Yunusa-Ari.
During an interview on Channels TV on Thursday night, Okoye told Nigerians that the next course of action would be announced soon.
Suspended Adamawa REC, Yunusa-Ari Opens Up On Receiving N2 Billion Bribe To Declare Binani
“I am aware that the police have concluded investigations and I am aware that in the next few weeks, Nigerians will be informed of what will happen,” he said.
“Under the law, it is the responsibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission to prosecute him (Ari) if a prima facie case has made out against him.”
According to news reports, Yunusa-Ari controversially declared Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Adamawa State supplemental governorship election in April 2023 while results were still being collated.
For the process to proceed, INEC has to intervene quickly to override and cancel Yunusa-Ari’s judgment.
UPDATE: Police, DSS, INEC Invite Suspended Adamawa REC, Yunusa-Ari
Following the incident, Yari was suspended, and then-President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a thorough inquiry into the electoral commissioner and the security men present when he made the declaration.
INEC then declared the current governor, Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the legitimate victor of the election.
Yunusa-Ari went into hiding for a few days following the Adamawa incident, but the Police declared him sought. On May 2, 2023, he surrendered to authorities and was later given bail on May 5, 2023.
Little has been said about the development since then, although it was brought up again during Thursday’s interview.
When asked, Okoye stated that INEC has been working with police officials and that a decision will be made public “very soon.”
