Rev. Fr. Stanislaus Mbamara, a priest from the Nnewi Catholic Diocese who was abducted by gunmen on Friday night, has been released.
The priest, who had been held captive for two days, was released on Sunday, according to the diocese’s chancellor, Rev. Fr. Raphael Edeogu.
The diocese expressed gratitude to Catholics and their friends who joined them in praying for the priest’s release.

Edeogu in the release said: “With joy, Nnewi Diocese is announcing that today June 4 2023, Rev. Fr. Stanislaus Mbamara, kidnapped two days ago, has been liberated.
“We sincerely thank all of you who joined us in prayer for God’s intervention.
“Please, join us in happily acknowledging God’s compassion once again. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now ever shall be, world without end.”
The priest was abducted on Friday while traveling from Awka to Nnewi. He is thought to be a student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
