In a devastating incident in Awka, Anambra State, a 100-level female student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University lost her life to a stray bullet believed to have been fired by unidentified hoodlums, suspected to be cultists. The tragic event unfolded late one evening along the bustling Miracle Junction in Ifite Awka.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described a horrifying scenario where hoodlums were in hot pursuit, seemingly chasing a tricycle operator. Their intent appeared to be a deadly one, aimed at the operator. However, amidst the chaos, one of the bullets went off course, striking the innocent student, identified simply as Uche, who was walking along the roadside.
Uche, a student in the university’s Medical Lab Department, had been on her way to the market when the cruel twist of fate took her life. The commotion and the terrifying gunshot left the area in shock and mourning.
One witness recounted, “This deceased was a 100-level student of the Faculty of Health Science; she was killed on Thursday evening by a stray bullet shot by suspected cultists who were chasing a tricycle operator at the popular Miracle Junction. The tricycle driver was shot too, and he pretended to be dead, but surprisingly, he stood up after a while and escaped when his attackers had left thinking he was dead.

Tragically, Uche did not survive the incident, and her life was cut short in such a senseless and tragic manner. Her remains were taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.
The Anambra State Police Command, led by DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident. According to Ikenga, preliminary information suggests that the incident may be related to cult activities. The police have launched an investigation into the incident, urging witnesses to come forward and provide information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the culprits.
In response to the tragic event, the police have intensified patrols and surveillance in the area. DSP Ikenga assured the public that the command is committed to eradicating cultism and other forms of crime in the state.
