President Bola Tinubu has filed a motion to stop a United States Federal Court from giving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar access to his university academic records.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, Atiku approached the States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on August 2 to request that Tinubu’s academic records be released from Chicago State University, citing long-running concerns surrounding the Nigerian president’s past.
Atiku stated in his subpoena that he was requesting the records as part of discovery to support his legal challenge against the election of Tinubu as president of Nigeria.
Chicago Court Dismiss Atiku’s Suit Filed Against Tinubu
A county judge in Chicago, Illinois dismissed the earlier case from the docket after Atiku withdrew it in order to submit a more thorough complaint in the federal court, opening the way for Abubakar’s federal complaint. Atiku had previously filed a lawsuit before the county court in Chicago, Illinois, but withdrew it to make a more thorough complaint there.
According to Peoples Gazette, Tinubu has requested to be included in the lawsuit as an interested party, claiming that Chicago State University might not be able to adequately protect his rights as the owner of the requested documents.
The Nigerian president made his case in a motion to join the lawsuit that was presented by his Chicago counsel, Christopher Carmichael, on August 3.
In light of the fact that the records were covered by a 1974 American student privacy statute, Tinubu contended that they shouldn’t be made public.

In spite of this, a federal judge had been assigned to the case, and both parties expected a speedy hearing and resolution, particularly when Atiku claimed that the Nigerian election petitions tribunal would issue its ruling around September 21, 2023.
