In response to the rising insecurity in Nigeria and the Southeast, Nnewi Community has boosted the morale of the men of the Vigilante Service who were recently trained by the Nigeria Police Force, to combat crime and boost security in the local communities.
The inauguration of the selected Anambra Vigilantes Group Volunteers from Nnewi, which took place on Saturday, 25th April 2021, at Igwe Nnewi Palace, also saw the inauguration of the Nnewi Security Committee headed by Chief Sir Patrick Ubajiaka (Ike Nnewi).
Handing over the new Innoson patrol vans to the new constables, the Traditional Ruler of Nnewi, His Royal Highness, Igwe Dr. Kenneth Orizu (III), said that the patrol vans were donated through the contributions of Nnewi sons and daughters, to aid the new constables to stem and forestall any possible break down of law and order.
He encouraged the constables to be dedicated in their duties, especially in fishing out criminal elements in the town, urging them to maintain a good relationship with the locals to enable them to discharge their duties properly.
Speaking also, the Chief Executive Officer of Ibeto Group, Chief. Cletus Mmadubugwu Ibeto (Omekanaya) warned that Nnewi Security Outfit wasn’t established to control traffic, to serve as escorts, or to confiscate motorcycles, but to bring security closer to the people.
He revealed that the security outfit has the support of prominent Nnewi sons and daughters, noting that more support will be given to the outfit to make them effective.
On his own part, a retired Commissioner of Police, Chief Ikechukwu Ayoduba, said that the security outfit is not in competition with the Nigeria Police, rather, they were established to play a complementary role to the Police.
In his own address, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano who was represented by Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka (OGILISI IGBO) urged the newly inaugurated AVG personnel to be diligent and tactful in their operations advising all local governments that are yet to key in into the ongoing reformation of the vigilante to emulate Nnewi community and reform their AVG for a better and improved security system across the state.
According to him, communities like Azia in Ihiala Local Government and Onitsha (North and South) have already floated a rebranded vigilante system, noting that all these efforts are geared towards improving the security of lives and properties. He urged members of the community to work together with the AVG by providing useful information and reporting suspicious activities promptly.
The major highlight of the event featured the handing-over of the patrol vans to the security outfit and inauguration of the Nnewi Security Committee which have Chief Sir Patrick Ubajiaka (Ike Nnewi) as Chairman, with Sir Ben Ngonadi, Chief OTC Ofordeme, Mr. Samuel Ogegbuna, Mr. Ifeanyi Onyenaucheya, and Mr. Azuka as members.
Other personalities present during the inauguration of the security outfit include the Traditional Ruler of Uruagu, Obi Afamefuna Charles Obi (Ogidi IV), the Traditional Ruler of Umudim, Obi Benneth Okafor (Amaukwu), and the Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Prince Engr. Chukwudi Orizu.
Others are the founder of Cutix Cables Plc, Engr. Gilbert Ajulu Uzodike, Caretaker Committee Chairman of Uruagu-Nnewi, Chief Arthur Ngwube, Engr. Onyediaka Nwachukwu (Igwe Abaa Nigeria) and other prominent personalities.
