The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued a stern warning to what they term “desperate and mischievous politicians” against exploiting the name of the pro-Biafra group for political advantage. The family’s statement comes in response to a viral video where a group accused Governor Alex Otti of sponsoring IPOB to disrupt the state ahead of the judgment of the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
The Kanu family categorically dismissed these allegations as baseless and laughable, asserting that IPOB has no involvement in Nigerian elections, let alone election tribunal judgments. They emphasized that IPOB’s primary focus is on securing the release of its leader, who they claim is being unlawfully detained, and organizing a referendum for Biafra.

The family urged politicians to resolve their differences without dragging IPOB into their political disputes. They expressed their concern about opportunists attempting to use IPOB’s name for personal gain, stating that IPOB and Kanu have become recognizable brands that attention-seekers believe will boost their profiles.
The Kanu family questioned the motives behind those who sponsored the press conference and accused them of trying to tarnish Otti’s reputation. They emphasized that IPOB has never meddled in elections and criticized attempts to score political points by associating the group with political intrigues.
Furthermore, the family expressed bewilderment at the lack of interest from politicians in compelling the Federal Government to comply with court orders for Kanu’s unconditional release. They highlighted that Nnamdi Kanu’s detention is on civil, not criminal, grounds, and they expected the group to focus on this matter instead of indulging in political controversies.
In response, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) distanced itself from the saga, asserting its commitment to the rules. The PDP called on the ruling Labour Party to identify those behind the viral video rather than implicating all opposition parties collectively. The PDP emphasized its respect for the judiciary and its support for the tribunal to dispense justice without fear of intimidation.
