Reactions have trailed a proposal for Nigeria’s name to be changed to United African Republic.
The House of Representatives’ Special Committee on Constitution Review on Wednesday received the proposal from Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant, at the South West zonal public hearing in Lagos.
According to Jokotoye, a change of name for the country would physically and psychologically reflect a new beginning.
Proposal: House Of Reps To Change Nigeria’s Name To ‘UAR’
On the choice of name, the consultant explained that Nigeria is made up of hundreds of ethnic groups that need to be united.
But his proposal appears not to go well with Nigerians, as many said renaming the country would not change anything.
“People just want security, light, good roads and a working economy! Is that too much to ask?” read one of the tweets.

The idea of United African Republic is from the deep hell of Escapism from the debt Nigeria is owning other countries.

When the country is edging closer to anarchy due to bad leadership. Some group of persons who think that this country is their personal property are thinking of renaming Nigeria to United African Republic. We truly deserve younger folks in power who can think with their brains.

Must have thought United in the name makes the country rich. United African Republic (UAR) like the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, United States. Lol. Someone spent weeks working on that idea. Probably even got a grant. Lol. I am tired.

The National Assembly's proposal of a change in name from 'Nigeria' to 'The United African Republic(UAR)' is cosmetic & hypocritical without corresponding efforts to engender true unity & the features of a republic in this country. Their priorities are indeed trifling & baffling.

When the Nigerian Government is under pressure, the ONLY solution for them is to change names of existing organizations instead of going back to the drawing board to restrategize #Unitedafricanrepublic

The problem with Nigeria is not in its name. If we change it to United African Republic and still have the likes of Buhari and Malami in it, the thing wey dey cry go still dey cry
