Ayodele Olawande, the minister of state for youth development, has voiced concern over the lack of fundamental skills among young people in Nigeria, claiming that it negatively affects their employability.
Stressing the seriousness of the situation, he disclosed that a lot of private companies now favour hiring foreigners because they believe young Nigerians lack the requisite skills.
Minister Olawande expressed his displeasure with the current situation during a courtesy visit by the National Youth Leaders Forum of all political parties in Nigeria, which is chaired by Muhammad Awwal Musa. He exhorted the young people to aggressively seek out and gain skills that would increase their employability and appeal to employers.

The Minister suggested starting a campaign called “One Youth, Two Skills” in a statement issued by Maryam Umar Yusuf, Head of the Ministry’s Press and Public Relations Unit.
By forcing young people in Nigeria to learn at least two marketable skills, this movement seeks to empower them.
Minister Olawande asserted, “This is why the Ministry of youth development is spearheading initiatives to compel every young person in the country to have at least two skills that they can market.
“With the tagline, ‘One Youth, Two Skills,’ we want to emphasize that it is unacceptable and, indeed, an injustice for a youth in this country not to have a skill that he or she can deploy to earn a decent living,” the Minister Disclosed.
