In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria has lost the joint bid to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The hosting rights have been awarded to Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, marking the first time these countries will host the prestigious tournament.
Nigeria had entered a joint bid with Benin Republic to host the 2027 AFCON, and the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, had arrived in Egypt with representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation for the bid.

However, the decision to award the hosting rights to Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania was made by CAF’s Executive Council members during a meeting in Cairo, Egypt.
Nigeria has a rich history with the AFCON, having hosted the competition in 1980 and emerging as champions. Two decades later, Nigeria co-hosted the 2000 edition with Ghana, reaching the final but losing to Cameroon on penalties.
In another announcement, the CAF Executive Council members awarded the 2025 AFCON edition to Morocco, marking the second time Morocco will host the tournament since its first hosting in 1988.
As for the upcoming AFCON tournaments, the 2023 edition is scheduled to take place in Côte d’Ivoire in 2024. Côte d’Ivoire previously hosted the tournament in 1984.
