The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed his disappointment in the contractors responsible for the East-West Road project. During an inspection of the road, Umahi was dismayed by its condition, despite the significant investment of N71 billion by the Federal Government for its rehabilitation.
Umahi’s frustration was evident as he traveled by road from Abuja, passing through several states to Port Harcourt in Rivers State. His purpose was to assess the progress of the highway’s construction.
The minister criticized the contractors for using the excuse of overloading as a cover-up for their failure to properly construct the road. He declared a vote of no confidence in the project, stating that he wouldn’t certify anything related to the road’s current state.

Umahi emphasized that the road was riddled with potholes and had deteriorated significantly despite the substantial financial resources allocated to its reconstruction. He also revealed that the project cost had escalated from N44 billion to N144 billion.
Addressing the company’s representatives, the minister demanded accountability and transparency. He instructed them to meet him in Abuja to explain the reasons behind the road’s failure and called for the proper construction of Nigeria’s roads. Umahi stressed the importance of delivering quality infrastructure to ensure that Nigerians can enjoy the benefits of a democratic government.
