Tragedy struck at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, as an unidentified man lost his life in the act of allegedly stealing a high-tension cable. The incident occurred on the night of Monday, September 11, 2023, near the Faculty of Education building, in close proximity to the Department of Economics.
According to reports, the man was electrocuted while in the process of stealing the high-tension cable. The situation unfolded when electricity was unexpectedly restored by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) while the suspect was attempting to cut the cable.
The lifeless body of the man was discovered dangling from an electric pole at a transformer point the following morning. EEDC officials, along with the police and representatives from the Safety Department of the University, responded to the scene to retrieve the body, which was hanging from the electric pole.

An eyewitness who preferred to remain anonymous provided further details of the incident. They recounted, “Evidence showed he was almost done cutting a high-tension cable before electricity was restored by the EEDC and he got electrocuted.” The retrieval of the body took place around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
The unfortunate incident highlights the dangers associated with cable theft and the potentially fatal consequences that may arise from such criminal activities. It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and refraining from engaging in illegal and life-threatening activities.
