The crisis rocking the Ekiti state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a dangerous turn on Saturday, August 29, as two state party chairmen and other executives emerged from different factions after 2 parallel congresses.
According to reports, the PDP state congresses were held at two different locations in the state capital with the factions led by Senator Biodun Olujimi and former Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose.
It was gathered that the chairman of Ekiti caretaker committee, Senator Hosea Agboola, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and police were absent at the parallel congresses.
Though each faction announced new executive officers, Kehinde Odebunmi, a former member of the House of Representatives emerged as the state chairman from a group loyal to Olujimi and Bisi Kolawole former commissioner for environment for Fayose’s camp.
The leadership tussle between Fayose and Olujumi over the control of PDP has led to the emergence of two dominant factions in the party.
Recall that the crisis over the control of the PDP in Ekiti state took a dramatic turn as Olujimi, former Senate minority leader, dusted off defection rumour. Olujimi was said to have been planning to dump the opposition party for the All Progressives Congress (APC) because of state former governor.
But while lifting the lid, the lawmaker said she is still in PDP and would not dump the party for any reason be it personal or political.
Addressing journalist on Sunday, August 9, in Ado-Ekiti, the PDP chieftain said she would not succumb to the campaign of calumny channelled against her “soaring political relevance” in Ekiti by the former governor.
Meanwhile, members of APC in Ekiti including Babafemi Ojudu, an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, have accused Governor Kayode Fayemi of making attempt to silence the voices of dissents in the state’s party chapter.
The aggrieved members numbering sixteen raised the complaints in a statement issued on Sunday, June 28, in another unfolding drama that is about to trail the APC leadership crisis at the national level.
The members said since 2018 when Governor Fayemi was elected, the state chapter has not convened any “political meeting of stakeholders, no new membership drive, no political activity.“
