If Umar Ililya Damagum, the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), does not step down, a group of sixty PDP legislators in the House of Representatives has vowed to defect.
The legislators expressed displeasure with Damagum’s leadership and stressed that, in accordance with the party’s constitution, the new head should be from the North Central area.
The members accused Damagum of ceding control of the PDP’s leadership to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing his purported partnership with FCT minister Nyesom Wike. Leading the charge with five other lawmakers, Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga, voiced their complaints to the media in the National Assembly.

Ikenga chastised Damagum, accusing him of engaging in anti-party activities and comparing his behaviour to betrayal of the party for one’s own benefit.
Using President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s path as an example, he drew comparisons to emphasise the significance of consistency in opposition politics.
The lawmakers urged Damagum’s swift dismissal to prevent more harm, emphasising that his continuing presence could mean death for the party.
They issued a strong warning in closing, saying they would be willing to leave their current political party if their demands were not met.
