Aisha Yesufu, a social critic and human rights activist, expressed concern on Thursday regarding the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) alleged overcharging of students for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a recent post on her official X handle, Yesufu claimed that the country’s educational disparity gap would be getting wider as a result of JAMB’s over N50 billion in earnings, which Vice President Kashim Shettima highlighted.
Yesufu stressed that JAMB shouldn’t operate as a for-profit company since it is an educational institution.
JAMB Registers 1.1 Million UTME Candidates
The criticism follows Shettima’s disclosure that, in less than a year, JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede produced nearly N50 billion for the Federal Government.
This information was revealed by Shettima at a public event sponsored by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He further mentioned that, prior to Oloyede taking office, JAMB had never produced $1 million for the Federal Government.
Let me say what I have said before: Yesufu questioned the propriety of JAMB earning such a large amount of money in her statement. The goal of JAMB is not to be a profit-making organisation.
“JAMB making 50bn means JAMB is over charging students.
“I will even call it extortion of poor and vulnerable students and widening the educational inequality gap,” she added.
