Benue State Takes a Sip: Building a Homegrown Brewery to Stem Capital Flight In a bid to address the significant outflow of funds caused by residents’ consumption of beer from other states, the Benue State Government is set to embark on a groundbreaking venture: the establishment of its own brewery. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC), aims not only to retain capital within the state but also to provide high-quality, locally-produced beer to its citizens. Dr. Raymond Asemakaha, the Managing Director of BIPC, recently unveiled plans for this pioneering initiative during a press briefing. He highlighted the alarming statistics that propelled this decision, revealing that Benue residents currently spend a staggering N850 million monthly on beer sourced from outside the state. Recognizing the economic implications of this trend, the government resolved to take action by creating a brewery that utilizes local raw materials and offers a premium alternative to imported brands. The brewery, scheduled to commence operations in December, promises to revolutionize the local beer industry. With an estimated production capacity of 180,000 bottles per day and a fermentation period of 15 days, it aims to meet the growing demand for beer while simultaneously driving down prices. However, Asemakaha emphasized that this endeavor is not about competition; rather, it's about empowering local communities and retaining financial resources within the state. One of the most compelling aspects of this project is its commitment to sustainability. By sourcing raw materials locally and fostering partnerships with farmers, the brewery seeks to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that benefits the entire region. Asemakaha outlined plans to distribute seedlings to farmers, enabling them to cultivate crops for brewery ingredients and thus stimulating agricultural productivity.
