The Kogi East Elders Council (KEEC), an Igala organisation, has requested for the state’s governorship election on November 11 to be postponed.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the council’s Secretary of Political Committee, Alphonsus K. Alhassan, the election should be postponed due to the state’s violence and fatalities.
The elders also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Kogi and appoint an administrator to manage the state’s activities until normalcy can be restored.

A state of emergency, according to the council, is required to ensure that the upcoming election is free, fair, and legitimate.
The statement read in parts: “What we are seeing in Kogi State and Kogi East in particular leaves much to be desired. We cannot watch our people intimidated, harassed and slaughtered endlessly by anybody in the name of politics. We have had enough of this beastly behaviour.”
The elders also requested that the State Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Navy Commander, NU Akalezi, be promptly redeployed out of Kogi State, claiming that they had been compromised.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has stated that an inquiry into Tuesday’s violent incident at Anyigba in Kogi State’s Dekina Local Government Area has been initiated.

On Thursday, the police chief paid a courtesy call on Governor Yahaya Bello at the Government House in Lokoja, the state capital.
Egbetokun stated that the police authority is dissatisfied with the pockets of pre-election violence that have already been documented in the state and that essential procedures are being taken to prevent further violence before, during, and after the election in the state.
He said: “Although not conclusive, it seems like an operational error, but an investigation will reveal what happened. I want to assure that police will be neutral and will do their job in the election.“
