On Wednesday, there were tumultuous exchanges amongst Labour Party leaders in Abuja as various party factions attempted to seize control of the National Secretariat, which is located in Utako, Abuja.
News organizations are aware that there are currently two factions inside the party. The National Chairman Julius Abure is in charge of one group, and Lamidi Apapa, the acting National Chairman, is in charge of the other.
As the party moves to screen candidates for the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi, supporters of the two factions are staking claims to the party’s leadership. Yesterday, their dispute reached the party’s headquarters.
LP Chairmen – Apapa Remains Suspended, Can’t Screen Candidates For Elections
According to reports, it required the involvement of security personnel, including private security guards tasked with securing the party’s headquarters building, to stop a verbal altercation between the party’s leaders and their supporters from turning into a free-for-all.
The National Working Committee (NWC) members and supporters of Abure reportedly showed up at the Secretariat for a meeting and potential screening of candidates for governor of Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi.
Apapa reportedly arrived for the same workout with his supporters in tow just as they were getting started.
However, once security personnel intervened, they were persuaded to withdraw.
After the encounter, High Chief Rotimi Kehinde, a spokesperson for the Forum of LP state chairmen, spoke with journalists and said that they had arrived to interview candidates for governor of the states of Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo but were turned away from the secretariat.

Rotimi, the party’s chairman for Kwara State and a supporter of Abure, asserted that the Apapa-led faction’s Tuesday screening of some candidates lacked the authority to do so.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to Keecee Igara, chairman of the Abia State chapter, have been accused of fomenting an LP crisis.
Igara claimed that the two parties are attempting to undermine the party by utilizing suspended party members.
“We are talking about taking back Nigeria, if we must take back Nigeria, we must stand on the truth. We must stand on equity and justice,” Igara told reporters.
