Goodluck Jonathan, former Nigerian president has revealed why he established Almajiri School in the North during his time in office.
Jonathan expressed his thoughts at the first Bayelsa State Education Summit, which was held at the Conference Hall of the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, in Yenagoa, the state capital, with the theme “Optimising the Delivery, Performance, and Sustainability of Outcomes in the Education Sector.”
He remarked that in order to alleviate the North’s constant crises and uncertainty, he chose to inject western knowledge into their culture.

He argued that a functioning society cannot exist without a functioning educational system.
“When I was Vice President, I was discussing the crisis in the North with one of my Technical Assistants from Anambra State about how we can deal with it,” he said. Some young boys appear to have no future, and we cannot allow the system to continue in this manner in order to avoid a crisis.
“We traveled to the north and spoke with the clergy who instruct these lads under trees and improvised structures. We also had a conversation with the emirs.
“They (Almajiris) considered themselves educated, yet society continues to shun them.” Even their local government council is unable to hire them as messengers because they lack any Western education in addition to their Koranic education.
