The House of Representatives in Nigeria has successfully screened and confirmed the presidential designates for the Board and Management of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). These designates appeared before a House ad-hoc committee specifically assigned to conduct the screening.
This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s official request to the House of Representatives for the ratification of the NDDC chairman and the governing board, in accordance with section 2(2) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (Establishment, etc.) Act.
On August 29, President Tinubu endorsed Mr. Chiedu Ebie for the position of NDDC board chairman and appointed 16 other individuals to the commission’s board.
Chairman of the House Committee on NDDC, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, urged the designates to demonstrate integrity and vision in executing the commission’s mandate, emphasizing the need for visionary leaders to make a real impact on the Niger Delta region’s people and communities.
During the screening, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, NDDC Chairman designate, and Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, NDDC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer designate, presented their career backgrounds and visions for the commission.
Following the presentations, Deputy Minority Leader of the House, Ali Isa, proposed a motion for the designates to take a bow, considering that they had already been screened and confirmed by the Senate, and some of them had previously served as parliamentarians. The motion was seconded by Deputy Leader of the House, Abdullahi Ibrahim Halims, and unanimously approved by the committee.
This confirmation by the ad-hoc committee satisfies Section 2(2)(a) of the NDDC Act, which requires that nominees be screened and confirmed by the Senate in consultation with the House of Representatives. The National Assembly will transmit its resolution to the Presidency accordingly.
