Governor Otti Market Reconstruction Post-Fire: Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has swiftly responded to the tragic fire incident that ravaged a section of Ahia Ohuru (New Market) at Ngwa Road, Aba. Governor Otti, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, Mayor of Aba South, Chief Uche Wogu, and other state and market executives, visited the scene of the burnt market on Sunday following the incident on Saturday night.

Upon witnessing the devastating aftermath of the fire, Governor Otti expressed deep concern over the poor condition of the structures housing the market stalls, emphasizing that they pose a great threat to lives and are unfit for human activities. He immediately pledged to engage with the traders through the market leadership to facilitate the relocation of traders to a temporary site and commence the process of rebuilding the market.

“This place is not worthy for anyone to stay. All these places. This (the structure) will soon cave in. So, what we need to do is engage the market leadership. All these buildings need to go down from A to Z. So we can relocate them to a temporary place and rebuild here, then they come back,” Governor Otti stated.

Acknowledging the longstanding issue of poor planning and structural integrity, Governor Otti directed the market leadership to collaborate with the local government chairman to engage with the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) to discuss comprehensive plans for the market’s reconstruction.
“The Mayor of Aba South attributed the poor condition of the buildings and structural arrangement of shops in the market to lack of proper planning and the use of substandard materials in building the shops,” the Governor’s Information Officer, Nwahiwe Chinonyerem Cleverson, noted.
Expressing sympathy for the affected traders and their losses, Cleverson also commended Governor Otti for his prompt response and commitment to the reconstruction of the market. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of incorporating fire hydrants into city plans to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The swift and decisive action taken by Governor Otti and his administration reflects a proactive approach to addressing community challenges and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and businesses in Abia State.
Stay tuned for further updates as the reconstruction efforts progress.
