Kano state governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has released and pardoned 12 death row convicts, some of whom have been on death row for 25 years.
This came as Governor Ganduje remitted the death sentences of six convicts to life in prison.
This was said in a statement signed by SC Musbahu Lawan K/ Nassarawa Kano Command Public Relations Officer, a copy of which was made available to journalists on Tuesday in Kano.
According to him, the Governor also pardoned four female inmates serving long terms for good behaviour and hard work, as recommended by the Prisons Authority.
The Governor also provided N5000 in transportation to each of the released inmates so that they could rejoin with their family.

He disclosed that some of the pardoned inmates have spent 25 years awaiting execution.
Earlier, the Chairman of the prerogative of Mercy, Abdullahi Garba Rano thanked Ganduje for using the power conferred on him by the Constitution to released the inmates with good behavior at the recommendation of the Advisory council of prerogative of Mercy.
The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Sulaiman Mohd Inuwa commended the Governor for decongesting the custodial Center.
He then called on the released inmates to be good ambassador of the Nigerian Correctional Service to the society and to stay away from any act that can lead them back to the crime.
