The Federal Government of Nigeria, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has licensed six new corporations to import petroleum products into the country.
According to news sources, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Mainstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDRA), Farouk Ahmed, informed State House correspondents of this at the Presidential Villa.
Ahmed disputed allegations that the Nigerian National Petroleum business Limited (NNPCL) has granted Dangote Group permission to import petroleum, stating that the business lacks the authority to do so.

Apart from the six authorized, several companies sought for licences to import petroleum in due time, according to the NMDRA MD.
He revealed that multiple companies requested for gasoline importation permits, and that anyone might apply for importation to gain access to the port because the authority is accessible to everyone who wants to import.
Ahmed said, “There are six companies who said they want to import fuel in July. Of course, all the others may import in December in, November, or anytime but for those who expressed interest to bring in fuel in July, there were six of them as of this morning.
“The beauty of it is that there are interests which means that they have been able to have access to foreign exchange in order to import.

“Now, as we go along, of course, we’ll be briefing you on the progress or the achievements so far, but the important thing is that NNPC has 30 days fuel sufficiency, so we do not anticipate any gap in supply or in distribution.”
Meanwhile, Tinubu has begun steps to prevent ship owners from withdrawing their vessels due to what they perceive to be high charges.
During an interactive session with shipping stakeholders at the State House, Zacchaeus Adedeji, Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, warned that Nigeria cannot afford to have vessels travel in and out of the country.
According to reports, at least two ship owners said they were keeping their vessels out of Nigeria after receiving a series of multimillion-dollar tax claims aiming to recoup unpaid fees from 2010 to 2019.
