“The storms come and go, the waves crash overhead, the big fish eat the little fish, and I keep on paddling”. This quote was made by Varys the Eunuch in the HBO series Game of Thrones, and since the inception of the Big Brother Naija show, there have been storms, waves, the big fish has always eaten the small fish and one lucky housemate has paddled his or her ship to safety either by using a strategy or reaping in the misfortune of others like a disqualification.
Being a housemate in the Big Brother House is what many people crave the most. But in Big Brother’s house, there are rules. The rules are printed out in a handbook, along with any rules specific to the country or that year’s particular format. They’re given to every contestant on the show so they can refer back to the rules at any time, which is why rule-breakers are not tolerated. Some offenses can result in punishments or penalties, but in other cases, the contestant can simply be disqualified. Here are five housemates who have been disqualified from the show since 2017.
1. Kbrule and Khloe
In the 2018 Big Brother edition captioned “Double Wahala” so many things happened and Kbrule’s eviction stands tall on the list. Big Brother introduced a new twist that year by pairing housemates and one of the (dis)advantages of the twist or so it seems was that you get punished if your partner misbehave.
Kbrule was paired with Khloe and they called themselves #TeamKSquare. They received their first strike after Kbrule jumped off the balcony and broke his arm. Being a team, Biggie issued a strike to them both.
Khloe was issued a strike for verbally abusing her partner, while K-Brule was issued a strike for attempting to assault housemates. Their strikes got a third when Khloe insulted Kbrule’s mum by calling her a whore. Biggie has his rules and he didn’t hesitate to issue them their third strike before sending them home.
2. Kemen
It’s been three years since Kemen was disqualified in the See Gobe 2017 edition of the Big Brother Naija reality show and memories of his expulsion might still linger in his heart. Kemen who had strong feelings for fellow housemate Tboss but was shoved on the dark waters of unrequited love took the laws into his hands and groped Tboss while she was asleep. Of course, the 247 camera captured the whole thing. Big Brother gave him his marching orders and it was the end of the road for him. Kemen has since apologized to Tboss for his actions and the duo are in good terms.
3. Tacha
The disqualification of Port Harcourt’s first daughter is still a hotly debated topic today, one that dominates both online and offline conversations. Tacha was among the favorites to win the “Pepperdem Edition” of the Big Brother Naija show in 2019 but she received strikes that Biggie later forgave before she got into what looks like a fight with fellow housemate Mercy who later won the show.

While it’s perfectly okay for housemates to yell at each other for as long as they want – and, let’s be honest, that’s one of the things we always hope will happen – it’s not fine for things to cross the line into physical altercations. If a housemate assaults someone else in any way, they will be disqualified. Despite Big Brother reading out the rules of why Tacha was disqualified, it didn’t sit well with Tacha’s fans and they tried to boycott the show. There were other physical threats against show host Ebuka because Tacha was the only housemate disqualified while Mercy only received two strikes. But Big Brother makes his rules and we are mere spectators in his show.
4. Erica
Erica’s black Sunday came like a flash. Although many saw it coming. Many would housemates would argue that she is unstable like water while others believe that her adventure in the house turned out to be a misadventure for her.
Erica who was already on two strikes for whispering so low that the microphone couldn’t pick her voice and sleeping on the Head of House when she was not the Head of House nor deputy. Most rules are guidelines only, meaning that if you do break them, you are likely only to be given a punishment. In most cases, this might be something like losing your immunity, being nominated for eviction, or being given a double nomination so that you are more likely to be voted out. This way, producers can make it more likely that rule-breakers will have to leave without actually having to expel them, or breaking the format of the show.
However, Erica made things worse for herself when she verbally abused fellow house Laycon. She also said other life-threatening insults to him. Erica criticized the organizers of the show, poured water on the deputy head of house side of the bed, and walked into the diary room telling organizers she is fed up. She did all of these under the influence of alcohol but rules are rules and Big brother disqualified her. Her fans have set up a Gofundme account to raise some money for her so she doesn’t slip into depression.
