Nigeria Legal Luminary, Chief Barr. Sir Ben. Etiaba (SAN) has bowed out as the Chairman of the prestigious Enugu Sports Club in 1929.
Barr. Ben Etiaba who handed over to the new Chairman, today, Monday 28th October 2019, two days after the Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi inaugurated Hon. Onyeka Onwe as the Executive Chairman of the Club expressed his gratitude to members of the club for their support all through his tenure.
It will be recalled that Hon. Onyeka Onwe in March 2019, emerged the new Chairman of Enugu Sports Club in an election conducted by the club.
Hon. Onwe who had prior to that election, been the Club’s Vice Chairman emerged winner having garnered 297 votes to beat his only contender, Chief Ndukwo Ogbuja, who scored 58 votes.

The election of Hon. Onwe who is now the 27th indigenous Chairman since the Europeans relinquished the leadership of the Club following the crisis that led to the civil war in 1967, brought to an end the tenure of Barr. Ben Etiaba
Speaking during the brief handover ceremony, Barr. Ben Etiaba (SAN) expressed his profound gratitude to the distinguished members of Enugu Sports Club 1929 for a hugely successful inauguration and most importantly, for the tremendous support he enjoyed in his two years at the saddle of the leadership of the club.
While congratulating the newly inaugurated Executive Committee, he urged to remain committed to achieving the great goals of our noble Club, which will determine the progress of the club.
It was important to note that Barr. Ben Etiaba before his election as Chairman was appointed the Vice-Chairman of Enugu Sports Club by the then Chairman of the Club, Barr. Obum Arum in March 2015. Prior to this appointment, Ben had served Enugu Sports Club as a member of the Club’s Disciplinary Committee between 2011 and 2013.
He was a former Captain of the Golf Section of Enugu Sports Club from 2011 to 2015 and had also served the Golf Section as Vice-Captain Between 2011 and 2013. He was the Chairman, Enugu Sports Club Projects Commissioning Committee 2016, and the Chairman, Enugu Sports Club Presidential Inauguration Committee 2015
