In a tragic turn of events, Inspector Nege Tavershima, a devoted police officer hailing from Mbayion in the Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, lost his life during a courageous encounter with kidnappers in Enugu. The incident unfolded as police operatives from the state Police Command thwarted the sinister plans of two kidnappers who had been terrorizing travelers along the Enugu-Ugwuogo-Opi-Nsukka road over the weekend.
Inspector Tavershima, assigned to duty at the Enugu State Government House, was accompanying officials when they unexpectedly encountered these criminals. Without hesitation, he joined his fellow officers to confront the dangerous kidnappers head-on.
Providing details of the incident, Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Police Command, shared that this harrowing encounter took place on Sunday, September 3, 2023. The criminals had blocked the road and were firing shots indiscriminately. The brave officers, some of whom were on VIP escort duty, swiftly sprang into action.

During the exchange of gunfire, two of the criminals were neutralized on the spot, while several others managed to escape into the nearby forest with gunshot wounds. The police, undeterred by the danger, managed to recover an AK-47 rifle with two magazines, along with eighty-two rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition and sixteen rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, further demonstrating their commitment to ensuring public safety.
Tragically, Inspector Tavershima sustained a gunshot wound during the intense firefight and was rushed to the hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on the morning of September 4, 2023. His body has been placed in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
In the midst of this heart-wrenching loss, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, expressed his deep sorrow while praising the fallen officer’s gallantry, even in death. CP Uzuegbu commended all the police personnel involved, as well as the Neighbourhood Watch Group and Forest Guards who contributed to this operation. He reaffirmed the Police’s unwavering commitment to confronting and decisively dealing with unrepentant criminals that threaten the safety and security of the state.
