Nigeria, one of the world’s poorest nations, sent a sizable delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) 28th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28). With 1,411 registered delegates, the country had the biggest presence of any African nation and the third largest worldwide delegation, behind China and Brazil.
Bola Tinubu, who led the group, utilised the occasion to emphasise Nigeria’s position on a number of topical issues, such as climate finance and renewable energy. He emphasised the dire consequences of climate change for Nigeria, including threats to national security, erosion, flooding, and desertification.
Tinubu pushed on richer countries to provide more financial and technical assistance. Additionally, he reminded them of their public commitment to provide $100 billion a year to fund regional efforts aimed at tackling climate change-related issues.

In order to carry out Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation, the Nigerian delegation vigorously pursued the establishment of new and deeper bilateral relationships.
But Nigerians’ reactions have been provoked by the delegation’s makeup. The delegation included well-known individuals like Toke Makinwa and Seyi Tinubu, which raised questions about needless spending in light of the state of the economy. Critics contend that the inclusion of these people in the delegation is an excess that the nation cannot afford and that they have no bearing on the topic of the conference.
The delegation, which also included a number of civil society organisations from Nigeria, engaged fully in the conference in spite of these accusations. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosted the COP28, which took place in Dubai from Thursday, November 30, to Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
