According to the statement, the decision to close the market was conceived shortly after the combined team of the State government officials led by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and heads of security agencies visited the market.
The visit to the market was intended to ascertain trader’s compliance with government’s order closing all markets and borders in the state.
“Following the non-compliance by traders and the urgent need to start the fumigation of the market, the State Governme has ordered the closure, including adjoining sections and Akwata axis” the statement read.
Sirika said the project, which had gone beyond 90 percent, would have been delivered before Easter.
“But considering that the construction workers have downed tools owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government hereby officially announce suspension of procurement.

“The work would have been completed in 6-7 days, but the workers left to be with their families in view of the social distancing,” the minister declared.
While appealing for understanding on the part of the people of the Southeast Zone, the Minister expressed the hope that the issues would be resolved in two to three weeks time.
Anaedoonline.com reported that rehabilitation work at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport is running faster than the deadline given and Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika is confident that the airport would be re-opened before the Easter celebration in April.
