Atiku Abubakar’s Legal Battle Takes a New Turn
In an intriguing turn of events, Atiku Abubakar’s legal battle has shifted to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The former vice president is seeking to compel Chicago State University (CSU) to produce certain documents and information. The court has scheduled the hearing for Tuesday, September 12, adding another layer to the ongoing legal drama.
This development comes hot on the heels of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) dismissing Atiku’s case against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Undeterred, Atiku promptly filed a new case in the United States, specifically targeting Chicago State University.
The crux of the matter revolves around a subpoena issued to CSU. Atiku is requesting documents and information that he believes could bolster his legal position. The court’s Clerk docketed the case on Friday, September 8, 2023, setting the stage for what promises to be a crucial legal showdown.

The court has made provisions for CSU to provide testimony either in person or via telephone. While telephone appearances are allowed, the court has expressed a preference for in-person appearances, especially from counsel who will be speaking during the hearing.
The court is treating this matter with a sense of urgency, given the exigent circumstances presented by Atiku Abubakar’s legal team. The documents and information sought are seen as crucial in Atiku’s bid to challenge the Appeal Court’s judgment at the Supreme Court.
Documents Requested
Atiku’s legal team has requested several specific documents, including:
1. A copy of any diploma for a Bachelor of Science degree issued by CSU in 1979.
2. A copy of any diploma issued by CSU in 1979 to Mr. Tinubu.
3. Copies of any diplomas issued by CSU (excluding Mr. Tinubu) that share certain characteristics with Mr. Tinubu’s diploma, such as font, seal, signatures, and wording.
4. Copies of any CSU documents relating to Mr. Tinubu that were certified by Jamar C. Orr, Esq.
5. All communications to or from CSU concerning the certification of such documents by Jamar C. Orr, Esq. between August 1, 2022, and August 1, 2023.
In addition to the documents, Atiku’s legal team is also seeking the appearance of CSU representatives at a deposition. This testimony is deemed vital to the ongoing civil action.
As this legal saga unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact Atiku Abubakar’s pursuit of justice and the broader political landscape in Nigeria. The quest for transparency and accountability in the electoral process continues to be a contentious issue.
