The court also invalidated the candidatures of the governorship candidates who emerged from the party’s Abure-led group, including Senator Athan Achonu, who was vying for the position in Imo state’s upcoming election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission was directed by the court to recognise and publish the names of the party’s governorship candidates in the states of Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo who came from the Apapa-led group.
Abure and Apapa have been squabbling for leadership for some time.
For instance, according to a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, a Court of Appeal in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, certified Abure as the legitimate national chairman of the party on Monday.

In his lead judgement, Justice Abadua upheld the High Court of Edo State’s ruling and concluded that, in accordance with Articles 13 and 17 of the Party’s Constitution as well as the current Electoral Act of 2022, one person cannot be allowed to suspend the national chairman of the party.
The party’s leadership dilemma reached a head in April, according to Anaedoonline.ng, after seven members of its National Working Committee, proclaimed the National Vice-Chairman (South), Lamidi Bashir Apapa, as the acting chairman of the party, replacing the suspended chairman, Julius Abure.
The party’s secretariat was soon taken over by some stern-looking police officers.
In the meantime, several political thugs previously invaded the national offices of the Labour Party in Abuja.

After an urgent meeting at the party’s secretariat in Abuja, Apapa said that the NWC members had acted in accordance with a ruling by the Federal Capital Territory High Court that barred Abure from representing himself as the party’s national chairman.
In addition to Abure, the court placed three additional party executives under house arrest for alleged forgery.
