The State High Court sitting in Owerri, Imo State, Monday, June 22, 2020, granted bail to Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, the detained Director-General, Imo PDP New Media.
He was arrested and detained by the Department of State Security (DSS) on May 28, 2020 and had remained in detention until his release.
His Counsel, Chief Mike Ahamba SAN, had filed a suit praying the Court to grant him bail on the grounds that the charges and offences for which he was arrested, detained and arraigned in Court by the Government of Imo State were bailable.
The government, vide the Attorney General, had owned up ordering the arrest of Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu by the DSS, and eventually arraigned him at the Magistrate Court in Owerri on June 5, 2020, after nine days.
Counsel to Nwaogwugwu approached the State High Court, Owerri on June 22 to seek his bail, following the violation of his human rights by detaining him beyond the legally stipulated period of 48 hours. That prayer was granted on June 22, 2020 when the Court ruled in his favour.
In his remark, the Chairman of the party, Sir Martin Ejiogu thanked the Imo Judiciary for standing up for democracy and justice, Imo PDP leaders and members, as well as all Imo people, for their support all through the period Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu was in detention. He assured them that Imo PDP will remain law-abiding and peace-loving.
Meanwhile, the N50 million suit filed by Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu against the DSS at the Federal High Court, Owerri was also heard on June 22, 2020. It was, however, adjourned to June 25, 2020. He is praying the Court to get the DSS to pay him N50 million as damages for unlawfully arresting and detaining him beyond the stipulated 48 hours.
Signed:
Ogubundu Nwadike,
Ag. State Publicity Secretary,
Imo PDP.
June 22, 2020.
