An emotional Jurgen Klopp revealed winning Liverpool’s first league title since 1990 was “more than I ever thought possible” after the trophy was secured without them kicking a ball.
Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea handed the club their 19th championship after waiting three decades.
In the last two years the German has delivered the Champions League and the World Club Cup but for the man who arrived at Anfield in 2015 pledging to “turn doubters to believers” said this was the pinnacle.
“It’s the best thing I can imagine and more than I ever thought possible,” the Reds manager told Sky Sports News as he fought back tears of emotion.
“I have no words, it’s unbelievable. It’s much more than I ever thought would be possible, becoming champion with this club is absolutely incredible.”
And delivering a message to fans, Klopp added: “It is for you out there. It’s all here (touching his heart) and all here (touching his head). It is a joy to do it for you.”
Klopp said on Wednesday night he would tune into the Chelsea-City game for tactical purposes only as they were both future opponents, but he relented and he and his squad assembled at Formby Hall, close to his home on Merseyside, to watch as a group.
And as hundreds of fans began to gather at Anfield the squad’s celebrations started in earnest when the final whistle blew at Stamford Bridge not long after Chelsea’s Willian drove home the penalty to make it 2-1 with City down to 10 men after Fernandinho was sent off for handball.
Klopp added: “It was really tense, the 95 or 100 minutes of the City game, as you can imagine. I didn’t want to be involved really but obviously as you’re watching you are involved.
“It was quite intense. Apart from this tonight we do absolutely nothing, This is a safe place for the boys, we couldn’t hold back.
“It is very important because is unforgettable. Tonight we made the best of our situation.”
Liverpool’s legend, Steven Gerrard, has congratulated the club for winning the Premier League title.
Gerrard, who is now the current coach of Rangers, described the title as an ‘incredible achievement’. Recall that Jurgen Klopp’s men were confirmed champions following Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Manchester City on Thursday night.
It was Liverpool’s first league title in 30 years.
Reacting to the development, Gerrad, who was unable to win the English top-flight league title during his time at Anfield, also thanked the Reds’ fans who waited for 30 years.
In a post on his official Instagram account, the ex-midfield maestro said: “Congratulations to all @liverpoolfc on winning the Premier League.
“Incredible achievement from a fantastic squad of top players. Led by a world-class manager and coaching team also a special mention for the backing from FSG.
“And lastly and most importantly, the fans who have waited 30 years. Let the party begin.”
