Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick has defended his decision to start paying players in local currency was in consonance with the federal government’s policy on strengthening the Naira.

Pinnick, while last week revealed plans by the football house to start paying Super Eagles Technical Adviser, stressed that all the Super Eagles’ players will have to abide with the new development, which he said was in line with the country’s policy structure.
Speaking in television sports programme, Pinnick said there was no going back on the decision in the best interest of the country’s football.

“The players when they play in Nigeria, their bonuses have been in the local currency (Naira). When they play abroad they’ll be paid in dollars but that I won’t tell you because we are going to take so many difficult decisions that will go across board because we need to promote our fiscal policy.
“If the government is saying that we need to strengthen our local currency (Naira) we shouldn’t be paying dollars. We are an integral part of the government,” said Pinnick.
Although Super Eagles’ players had in the past resisted efforts by the football body to pay their camp allowances and match bonuses in the country’s currency, Pinnick insisted that they will all have to flow with the NFF’s decision to finally abide with regulations put in place from the country’s seat of government in Abuja.

The NFF boss added that all the players will be paid their bonuses in the local currency, even as observers believe that the players stand to lose in terms of currency exchange values if they are paid in Naira because there is a gap between the official and parallel market rates, but Pinnick appeared to be affirmative in his conclusion over the matter.
