Amnesty International’s Country Director, Isa Sanusi, has strongly condemned the recent raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja, calling it a “sinister and calculated attack” aimed at intimidating the labour union. Sanusi expressed his concerns in a statement released on Thursday, following the incident that took place on Wednesday night.
Sanusi criticized the operation, in which armed security personnel stormed the NLC headquarters, ransacking the union’s bookshop and seizing materials they claimed were used to incite and organize recent protests. He emphasized that the raid appears to be part of a broader effort to stifle the NLC’s activities.
“We are deeply concerned about the safety of NLC officials,” Sanusi stated, highlighting that under international human rights law, trade unions have the right to participate in activities without fear of retaliation. Amnesty International stressed that Nigeria is obligated not only to respect but also to protect these rights from abuse.
The raid has sparked concerns about a potential crackdown on labour activism in Nigeria, as the NLC has been a leading force in recent protests against government policies. The incident is widely viewed as an attempt to silence the union’s voice and suppress its influence.
