Anthony Joshua is set to get a shot at becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion by facing the winner of the rematch between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
In an interview with *The Sun*, Hearn stated, “We anticipate that the winner of the December bout will face Anthony Joshua if he secures victory in September. The opponent for Joshua’s September fight isn’t confirmed yet, but we have three or four contenders in mind. That’s our definite plan.”
Joshua’s last appearance in the ring was a knockout victory over Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia this past March. He is now scheduled to fight Daniel Dubois in September at Wembley Stadium. Dubois recently captured the IBF ‘interim’ title by defeating Filip Hrgovic.
“Our main goal is to reclaim the world heavyweight title, and achieving undisputed status has always been the ultimate dream. We believe we’re just two fights away from that goal, but we must win those fights first,” added Hearn.
In their initial clash, Usyk defeated Fury by split decision, making him the first boxer since Lennox Lewis in 1999 to unify the heavyweight division. Usyk’s victory earned him the WBC title from Fury, adding it to his existing WBA (Super), WBO, IBF, and IBO belts.
Promoter Frank Warren, speaking to the *Daily Mail*, confirmed ongoing negotiations for a potential Joshua-Dubois matchup. “Daniel Dubois silenced his critics by winning the IBF ‘interim’ belt. We’re hopeful he’ll face AJ in the fall. It would be fantastic to host this fight in the UK, with two British fighters competing at Wembley,” Warren stated.
If Joshua overcomes Dubois, he will be positioned to challenge either Fury or Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight title. This scenario remains on the table even if Fury manages to avenge his loss to Usyk, potentially setting up a trilogy bout between the two heavyweights.
