In a bold statement, Kene Mkparu, the trailblazing former General Manager at Odeon Cinemas, founder of Film house and current mastermind behind Nigeria’s largest cinema, Komworld in Nnewi, Anambra state, asserted that a staggering 99% of movies produced in the South East are not suitable for cinemas. Mr. Mkparu, who prioritizes profitability over sentiment, made these remarks during the premiere of “THE GIST,” on Anaedo TV, at the relaunch of their podcast studio in Nnewi on 3rd february, 2024.
Mr. Mkparu emphasized his cinema venture’s financial objectives, stating, “I’m not here for charity but to make money because I’m going to pay back the bank. So it’s not about what I like but what my customers like”.
Sharing his journey from working at KFC to his pivotal role in European cinema management, Mkparu stressed that a good film’s primary purpose is to entertain. He cited Lion King, a globally renowned African-themed story, not created by an African, as an example of entertainment’s paramount importance.
Mkparu underscored the significance of appeal in filmmaking, urging filmmakers to prioritize content that resonates with the audience. He highlighted Nnewi’s untapped potential, particularly with its thriving educational institutions, stating, “Nnewi has 9 tertiary educational institutions and draws in 50,000 students annually, providing a substantial market for entertainment”.
The cinema tycoon expressed his preference for venturing into uncharted territories, explaining that Filmhouse and FilmOne were stepping stones to the realization of Komworld. His vision extends beyond business; he sees Nnewi as a hub for creativity and entertainment, showcasing the region through Anaedo TV’s new podcast studio located at Nnewi Digital Village, No 1 St. Peter Claver’s Rd Nnewi, Anambra State.
