The Federal Government of Nigeria has emphasized the importance of fostering technological knowledge among the youth to address global challenges. Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, conveyed this message during the 33rd convocation lecture at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
In his lecture titled “Knowledge and Research as a Foundation for Prosperous Economy,” Minister Tijani highlighted three key sectors crucial for national development: agriculture, manufacturing, and servicing. These sectors, he noted, have been used to measure the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) since 1980. To drive progress, he urged universities of technology to play a more significant role in advancing technological capabilities in Nigeria.
Minister Tijani stressed the need for universities to be active contributors to job creation through technological innovation. He encouraged students to embrace self-investment, emphasizing that universities should not only confer degrees but also generate and disseminate knowledge to advance the country.

Addressing specific challenges, the minister pointed out the underutilization of water bodies for fisheries and the dependence on fish importation. He called for the application of knowledge and innovation to address these issues, citing the example of the forestry sector facing similar challenges.
Furthermore, Minister Tijani noted that financial institutions had not achieved the expected growth, highlighting the importance of knowledge application to advance various sectors.
In conclusion, the Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, expressed satisfaction with the activities lined up for the 33rd-anniversary convocation. Bringing the minister to Akure for the first time was part of the efforts to showcase the university as a center of knowledge and innovation. The convocation serves as a platform to emphasize the role of technological knowledge in propelling the nation toward economic prosperity.
