The projected N160 million Toyota Land Cruiser SUV purchase for each member of the National Assembly has prompted a response from Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the general election of 2023.
Remember how the Senate faced strong criticism for its choice to purchase expensive cars in spite of the nation’s dire economic circumstances?
Nonetheless, a few senators emphasised that purchasing cars for official business is nothing new for government employees.
During a news conference in Abuja on Monday, Obi discussed the situation and stated that the cars should be returned when the employees leave the office because they are solely for official use.
But he insisted that if he had been president, things would have turned out differently.
According to him, “Let me start with the issue of Labour Party members in the House, I have actually discussed this issue with them. I heard that these vehicles are official cars.
“Which means they have to make use of them while in office. They are meant for official use so it’s not as if it’s their vehicles.
“They are meant to use them while they’re in the Senate but you know how things work here. It’s not going to be like that.
UPDATE: Peter Obi Hints On Contesting 2027 Presidential Election
“But what I tell people is that had Labour been in office[won the presidency] nobody would have contemplated that.
“You shouldn’t even do the wrong thing and start correcting it. It should not even be mentioned in the first place.”
