Court Upholds Validity of Enugu State Governor’s NYSC Certificate
In a significant legal development, Justice Nyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja has confirmed the authenticity of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate as validly issued by the corps. The judgment, delivered on Monday, sheds light on the governor’s NYSC journey and brings clarity to a contentious issue.
Justice Ekwo’s ruling was based on compelling evidence presented during the proceedings. It was revealed that Governor Peter Mbah was mobilized for NYSC service in 2001 and completed it in 2003. However, during his service period, he sought and received permission from the NYSC to attend the Nigeria Law School. Subsequently, he was reinstated into the NYSC in 2003.
The court underscored that the evidence of Governor Mbah’s service at the law firm of one Udeh remained unchallenged by the NYSC. Justice Ekwo also expressed his disappointment with the NYSC, noting that if they genuinely believed the certificate was forged, they should have taken legal action against the governor for forgery.

The court went further to assert that the NYSC had acted in bad faith and with mischief in denying Governor Mbah’s NYSC certificate. In a significant turn of events, the Director General and the NYSC were found guilty of misrepresenting material facts. Consequently, the court awarded a sum of N5 million in damages against them.
This judgment not only validates the authenticity of Governor Peter Mbah’s NYSC certificate but also highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in governmental institutions. It serves as a reminder that the legal system is a crucial mechanism for addressing disputes and ensuring justice is served, even when it involves the highest levels of government.
