The Nigerian House of Representatives has made a passionate appeal to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and other security agencies across the country. The plea is to intensify efforts, deploy personnel, and utilize intelligence capabilities to ensure the immediate and safe release of seven abducted National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Zamfara State who remain in captivity.
This urgent call to action stemmed from a motion presented by Honorable Unyime Idemm and seven other representatives during a plenary session. The motion, titled “Call on the Inspector General of Police IGP to Intensify Efforts to Secure the Immediate and Safe Release of the Seven Abducted Corps Members in Zamfara State,” highlights the importance of rescuing these young Nigerians who are still in the clutches of their captors.
The abduction of these seven corps members took place on August 17, 2023, when they were traveling to their respective places of primary assignment (PPA) in Zamfara State. It’s reported that the abductors are demanding a ransom of two hundred million Naira for their release.
This incident is not isolated, as the motion points out. In May 2023, another group of seven corps members was kidnapped in Rivers State while traveling from the orientation camp in Ondo State. They were ultimately released after a ransom was paid.
The House of Representatives expresses deep concern over the recurring abductions of young and innocent corps members. Such incidents not only pose significant security threats but also erode public trust and confidence in the government’s ability to protect its citizens. This ongoing situation threatens the core objective of the National Youth Service Corps, which is to foster national unity and development.
Attacks On INEC Offices, Commission Reveals Next Move
Recognizing the urgency of the matter, the House of Representatives has called for immediate and effective measures to secure the release of the remaining seven abducted corps members. The recent release of one of them, as confirmed by the Director-General of the NYSC on September 20, 2023, has heightened the need for prompt action.
To ensure that the call for action is heeded, the House has mandated the Committee on National Security and Intelligence to oversee compliance and report back within one week for further legislative measures.
