On Wednesday, two individuals were charged with assault and mutilating a guy named Ali Yaga’s left hand at Elepete, in the Ibeju Lekki district of the state. They appeared before the Chief Magistrates’ Court 4 in the Yaba region of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Police Command presented the two defendants, Suraju Azeez, 37, and Opeyemi Kabiru, 24, for arraignment before Magistrate O.A. Salawu.
The defendants and other people still at large committed the crime on June 14, 2023, at five in the morning in the Elepete, Ibeju Lekki neighborhood of Lagos, according to the prosecutor, Godwin Oriabure.
Godwin claimed that the two counts charged violated Sections 411 and 173 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of Nigeria, 2015.

The charge read in part, “That you, Suraju Azeez, Opeyemi Kabiru and others at large, on June 14, 2023, around 5am at Elepete, Ibeju Lekki Lagos, in the Lagos State Magisterial District, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit, assault, occasioning harm, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
“That you, Suraju Azeez, Opeyemi Kabiru and others at large, on June 14, 2023, around 5am at Elepete, Ibeju Lekki Lagos, in the Lagos State Magisterial District, did intentionally and unlawfully assault one Ali Yaga by macheting him on his left hand and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”
While Azeez pleaded not guilty to the charges, Kabiru pleaded guilty.
Magistrate Salawu admitted Azeez to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and ordered that Kabiru be remanded and the case file sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
She adjourned the case till September 14, 2023, for mention and facts and sentencing for Kabiru.
