In advance of the next elections in 2023, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has cautioned the presidential contenders and their supporters.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, the police were responding to online bullying and aggressive verbal sparring between supporters of the main presidential contenders.
In the run-up to the 2023 elections, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) have engaged in verbal combat.

There are worries that the verbal battle may end in violence and attacks during the campaigns that will start in September.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesman, requested the presidential candidates to warn their followers against using violence and other illegal tactics in an interview with Newsmen.
In the run-up to the elections in 2023, he also counseled all lawmakers to abstain from violence and to avoid intimidating voices of dissent and opposition.
The police official emphasized that the Electoral Act is crystal explicit regarding the proper sanctions for offences involving elections. He emphasized that the police would not treat a violation of the Electoral Act’s rules lightly.
Adejobi, however, emphasized that any threat to life was unlawful and urged anyone who felt intimidated to contact the police so that appropriate action could be taken.

He said, “Threats to life is a criminal offence, and everyone has the right to take up cases against anyone who threatens their life or engages in an act capable of making their life precarious or causing a problem in the country. Hence, whosoever feels threatened is at liberty to approach the police formally, for necessary action.
“The Electoral Act is clear on electoral offences and appropriate punishments. Also, our criminal laws can be applied in handling election-related crises. We have our laws and we are duty-bound to enforce them at all times.
“While we urge all political actors to be law-abiding and desist from violating the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, we will always engage relevant stakeholders, especially politicians, in deliberations, from time to time, on how to have a seamless exercise in 2023.”
