The Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Bright Edafe, has ignited a thought-provoking discussion about responsibility in the wake of the arrest of a 14-year-old armed robbery suspect found in possession of weapons.
In a social media post, Edafe shared the startling revelation that the young suspect had confessed to engaging in armed robbery since the tender age of seven. Alongside the post, he included a photo of the apprehended teenager and two other suspects, sparking a crucial question: Who should bear the blame—parents, society, or schools?
The 14-year-old suspect, identified as Gift Peace, was apprehended at Enerhen junction in Warri by officers from “B” Division, Warri. The arrest also led to the detention of two other individuals, 19-year-old Idigbe Osreis and 16-year-old Idigbe Perfect. Disturbingly, two locally made guns were seized from this group.

The revelation of a seven-year-old engaging in armed robbery raises serious concerns about the factors contributing to such criminal behavior at such a young age. DSP Edafe’s poignant question challenges us to consider who bears the responsibility for addressing this issue: parents, schools, or society as a whole.
This troubling case underscores the importance of early intervention and support for at-risk youth to prevent them from turning to a life of crime. It also highlights the need for a broader societal conversation about the role each of these stakeholders can play in nurturing and guiding young individuals toward positive paths.
